March Book Reviews

Late much? April was a crazy month XD

Crime and Punishment
Author: Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Genre: psychological, mystery
Rating: 1/5
Summary: When the student Raskolnikov puts his philosophical theory to the ultimate test of murder, a tragic tale of suffering and redemption unfolds in the dismal setting of the slums of czarist, prerevolutionary St. Petersburg.
My thoughts: School read, I only actually read the first 50 or so pages. As with The Turn of the Screw, it sounded much better in discussion than in reality. I found it dull and Raskolnikov was frankly annoying. It seemed like one big whine about how horrible his life was and how no one understood him, etc. I do think Raskolnikov had some mental disorders but that didn't make him any more of a believable character to me and I really couldn't sympathize with him. I think it would have been a munch better book if it was cut down to maybe a fifth.

NG Life Volume 3
Author: Muzuho Kusanagi
Genre: manga, fantasy, comedy, romance, drama
Rating: 4/5
Summary: Keidai's feelings and memories of his past in Pompeii are tested yet again when a beautiful girl appears who is an identical clone of Serena! And when she plays along that she's his "ex-girlfriend," Yuuma and Serizawa are thrown into a tizzy, too. Has their past-life/present-life love triangle suddenly become a quadrangle?!
My thoughts: I love this series, very cute and funny! The characters are really dynamic and lovable. I don't normally like love triangles (or quadrangles or...), but this series makes it very enjoyable. I feel so torn sometimes, wondering who will end up with who, then they always throw someone else into the mix! So frustrating, but fun as well :D

Title: Abhorsen
Author: GarthNix
Genre:  young adult, fantasy, adventure
Rating:  4/5
Summary: Orannis the Destroyer has been freed... And only Lirael, newly come into her inheritance as the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, has any chance of stopping it. She and her companions -- Sam, the Disreputable Dog, and Mogget -- have to take that chance. If Orannis's unspeakable powers are unleashed, it will mean the end of all Life. With the help of her companions and a vision from the Clayr to guide her, Lirael must search in both Life and Death for some means to defeat the Destroyer -- before it is too late. . . .
My thoughts: Reread. I love this series so much, though this is probably my least favorite of the three. I like all the characters a lot but the ending always bums me out even thought it's technically a happy ending XD I suppose I just liked Lirael a lot more in the library of the Clayr. A book all about the secrets of the library... that would be awesome!

Title: Soul Eater Volume 1
Author: Atsushi Ohkubo
Genre:  manga, fantasy
Rating:  3/5
Summary: Maka is a weapon meister, determined to turn her partner, a living scythe named Soul Eater, into a powerful death scythe - the ultimate weapon of Death himself! Charged with the task of collecting and devouring the tainted souls of ninety-nine humans and one witch, Maka and her fellow meisters strive to master their weapons as they face off against the bizarre and dangerous minions of the underworld. But the meisters' own personal quirks may prove a bigger obstacle than any sultry enchantress!
My thoughts:This series is so freaking weird!! I'd seen stuff about it before and thought it looked a bit odd but this was just... beyond strange! That being said, I liked it alright. It was kind of confusing at some parts and I don't particularly like any of the characters all that much, but it was ok. Too many gratuitous boob shots for my taste though XD

Soul Eater! Yeah, I could do without the boobs, but I love some the the characters.
Well the characters are certainly interesting XD
