April Book Reviews

You can tell I was stressed in April because I read a lot XD And May was another crazy month so this is way late...

Title: The Wand in the Word: Conversations with Writers of Fantasy
Author:   Ed. Leonard S. Marcus
Genre:  fantasy, biography
Rating:  5/5
Summary: In a series of incisive interviews, Leonard S. Marcus engages thirteen master storytellers in spirited conversation about their life and work, providing inspiring reading for fantasy fans and future writers alike. Finely nuanced and continually revealing, Leonard S. Marcus's interviews range widely over questions of literary craft and moral vision, as he asks thirteen noted fantasy authors about their pivotal life experiences, their literary influences and work routines, and their core beliefs about the place of fantasy in literature and in our lives.
My thoughts: Maybe I'm a bit strange, but I love learning about the lives of authors that I love. Out of the thirteen authors I think I'd read 9 or 10 or them and one of those was my absolute favorite author in the world,Tamora Pierce. It also includes Garth Nix, Brian Jacques, Jane Yolen, Diana Wynne Jones, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Anyway, I actually finished this the first day of April and I so wish I would have had time to read it again. It was so fascinating to see their histories and how they write and where they get their inspiration. If you like YA fantasy I'd definitely suggest reading this book. I'm sure I'll read it again soon!

Title: Soul Eater Volume 2
Author:  Atsuki Ohkubo
Genre:  manga, fantasy
Rating:  3/5
Summary: The remedial assignment continues as Soul and Maka confront Dr. Franken Stein, the man behind Sid-sensei's unfortunate transformation and the strongest meister ever to graduate from Death Weapon Meister Academy. Even without a weapon, his massive soul dwarfs them all-even big shot Black*Star! Can Maka rally her strength to face Stein in battle, or will despair be her downfall?
My thoughts: Another weird volume in the Soul Eater series... Frankly, I don't remember what happened in this one really. Still not very into this series, I just read it because a friend let me borrow it XD

Title: Totally Captivated Volume 6
Author: Hajin Yoo
Genre:  manga, romance, yaoi/ shonen-ai
Rating:  4/5
Summary: The mafia threatens Ewon into working for a loan shark, where he's forced to run dangerous errands for no pay. The culprit who doomed Ewon to this life is none other than Jiho, Ewon's jealous ex who still burns at Ewon's infidelity. Their gang leader Mookyul, with movie-star good looks and the bizarre, drunken habit of biting people on the neck, takes a keen interest in his attractive new errand boy. Will Ewon be able to survive the violent underworld (not to mention the constant sexual harassment) he must endure as an underling of Mookyul?
My thoughts: The end (I think?) of an excellent series D: I'm sad that its over but I'm so glad they got their happy ending! I was a little confused over what was going on with the chairman. Er... I don't remember for sure what went on in this volume but I do remember it was good!

Title: Cantarella Volume 3
Author:  You Higuri
Genre:  manga, historical
Rating:  4/5
Summary: Cesare Borgia's grand schemes are threatened when he's taken prisoner by a woman who has sworn to have him for herself, even if it means killing him! Can Cesare escape in time to save the one woman capable of banishing the ever-growing darkness in his heart? Chiaro rushes to the rescue -- but even the legendary assassin may not be able to help in time!
My thoughts: I really do love this series. Cesare is an awesome character, as is Chiaro. I do wish they'd hurry up and get together though XD I really like the history in this and this volume especially. The magic and darkness is also more prominent which is awesome!

Title: Our Kingdom- Arabian Nights

Despite Raoul's vow never to let himself suffer heartbreak again, he wonders if this love is worth breaking his vow over?
My thoughts: The summary for this one is a bit misleading I think. I don't remember there being much hesitation in jumping into love XD A pretty good read but neither the art or storyline really pulled me in very much.

Before they can figure out what is got their friend in such a bad move, Kotori finds himself captured by a beautiful ancient ghost in one of the school's bathroom mirrors.
My thoughts: It got weird this volume XD Still cute, but very weird, definitely a plot twist I didn't expect! Not much to say about it except that it was cute!

Title: Caged Slave

Rating:  4/5

Simultaneously, he's scouted by a business-talent head-hunter and receives an interesting work offer. But when he goes to meet them... his new boss is none other than his secret lover!
My thoughts: I'd been meaning to read this for quite awhile and I finally got the chance to. It was very good! It was kind of sad seeing them dance around the relationship for so long, but I'm glad they ended up with a happy ending.

Title: Hamlet
Author: William Shakespeare
Genre: play, drama, tragedy
Rating:  4/5
Summary: The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, or more simply Hamlet, is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1599 and 1601. The play, set in Denmark, recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet's father, the King, and then taken the throne and married Gertrude, Hamlet's mother. The play vividly charts the course of real and feigned madness—from overwhelming grief to seething rage—and explores themes of treachery, revenge, incest, and moral corruption.
My thoughts: A school read that I actually enjoyed! Hamlet was actually a very enjoyable character and there was plenty of comic relief. I was surprised by how many innuendos there really were. I don't usually like anything that ends with everyone dying, but for this it was ok :D

Title: Shirahime Syo
Author: Clamp
Genre: manga, fantasy, adventure
Rating:  3/5
Summary: Legends say that when it snows, it is because the snow princess is crying. From CLAMP, creators of Chobits and Cardcaptor Sakura, comes a collection of five tragic tales, all connected by the bond of snow. Shirahime-syo is CLAMP's return to traditional Japanese form and storytelling. Featuring luscious watercolors and gentle brushstrokes, it is a beautiful departure from CLAMP's usual fare. Discover for yourself the mystery behind the snow...
My thoughts: This was just... strange... I didn't know what I was getting into when I started reading and I'm really not sure I do now either XD The stories were interesting I guess, but I still really didn't know how they connected or related or even really what was going on much of the time! Still, an interesting read.
