June Book Reviews

Yay, this one's actually on time!! XD

Night School Volume 1
Author:  Svetlana Chmakova
Genre:  manga, fantasy
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  NIGHTSCHOOL answers the age-old question: Where do demons get their diplomas? Schools may close for the night and the lights may be off, but the classes still run. The Nightschool is education for a different crowd -- vampires, demons and weirns, a special breed of witches. When Alex, a young weirn, enrolls in a Nightschool to learn what has become of her sister, will she be prepared for what she finds there?
My thoughts: I really liked this. The characters look very similar to the ones in DramaCon, but they still had their own distinct personalities. I do love the art though. And the storyline was very interesting. I can't wait to read the next volume :D

Title: Yellow Omnibus Edition Volume 2
Author:  Makoto Tateno
Genre:  manga, romance, yaoi/ shonen-ai
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  A routine drug bust is all in a day's work for Taki and Goh. When a dead doctor turns up at the scene of the crime, these veteran "snatcher" partners are suddenly forced to follow a twisting trail of clues (and a mysterious dog) for the answers. While bullets fly, Goh's fierce desires also seek their target in Taki's heart! The clock is ticking, and a criminal must be caught...but will Goh ever truly catch Taki's eye?
My thoughts: Oooh intrigue in this one! haha I was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of good plot with my porn. And they finally had sex! And it was good :D So yes, interesting and smutty volume is good!

Title: Yokan: Premonition Volume 1
Author:  Makoto Tateno
Genre:  manga, romance, yaoi/ shonen-ai
Rating:  3/5
Summary:  Akira, a lead vocalist of the popular band Charon, one day asks Sunaga, a famous actor and talented lyrics writer, to write a song for him. Without missing a beat, Sunaga gladly accepts his inquiry - but he demands that Akira pays him with his body!
My thoughts: This was pretty good, not horribly interesting or anything, but a good read none the less. I do like the band mangas so that was a plus :D I'd suggest it for anyone who likes a bit of mystery plot in their porn.

Title: Truth or Dairy
Author:  Catherine Clark
Genre:  YA, humor, romance
Rating: 4/5
Summary: She's humiliated, she's angry....and she's through with boys. Or least that's what she says. This is the journal of Courtney Von Dragen Smith: middle child, product of divorce, would-be vegetarian. She writes the first mega-negative page the day after her boyfriend, "Such a Dave," breaks up with her because he's heading off to college. Angry and humiliated, Courtney vows to survive senior year on the anti-guy plan. But can she really give up guys and focus on friends, school, and her job at the hip café Truth or Diary? Or will a stint in student government, an epileptic dog, and a guy named Grant ("like-the-lake") Superior turn her world upside down and prove her journal right? It's true: life can get weirder.
My thoughts: Reread. The first time I read this was probably junior high so I understood some of the things in this book much better now XD I really like the diary format and Truth or Dairy is totally somewhere I would work in real life. Wonderful read :D

Title: Vegan Virgin Valentine
Author:  Carolyn Mackler
Genre:  YA
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  Mara Valentine is in control. She's a straight-A senior, a vegan, and her parents' pride and joy. She's neck-and-neck with her womanizing ex-boyfriend for number-one class ranking and plans to kick his salutatorian butt on her way out the door to Yale. Mara has her remaining months in Brockport all planned out, but the plan does not include having V, her slutty, pot-smoking, sixteen-year-old niece — yes, niece — come to live with her family. Nor does it involve lusting after her boss or dreaming about grilled cheese sandwiches every night. What does a control freak like Mara do when things start spinning wildly out of control?
My thoughts: Reread. Another one of my " I read this when I'm stressed and feel like crap" books. Again, Mara is a lot like me, though I was never quite as academically oriented as her XD I like how she learned that that was important, but other things in life were too. I think that's something I didn't really understand when I read this book years ago, but I think I understand it a lot more now!

Title: Wolf-Speaker
Author:  Tamora Pierce
Genre:  fantasy, YA
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  When humans start cutting down trees and digging holes in peaceful Dunlath Valley, the wolves know that something is wrong. They send a messenger to the only human who will listen -- Daine, a fourteen-year-old girl with the unpredictable power of wild magic. Daine and her closest companions heed the wolves' cry for help. But the challenge they are about to face in the valley is greater than they can possibly imagine...
My thoughts: Reread. Love this book! I really had forgotten about this book... I couldn't remember pretty much everything that had happened XD This time around I picked up a lot more on the beginnings of Daine and Numair's romantic relationship. Such a cute couple!

Title: Emperor Mage
Author:  Tamora Pierce
Genre:  fantasy, YA
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  Daine sails to Carthak as part of a peace treaty delegation from Tortall. While healing the Emperor's captive birds, Daine discovers a new and terrifying dimension of her wild magic: She can bring dead creatures back to life. What is she to do with such immense power? Finding out the answer nearly costs Daine her life.
My thoughts: Reread. I could have sworn this was the book Daine and Numair got together in, but it was just my faulty memory XD I do love this one though. Carthak is an interesting place, though I definitely prefer Tortall. I also like seeing more Rikash, he's a cool character, for a stormwing! It's also cool to imagine all the dinosaurs Daine brings to life... I think it took me a couple reads to figure out that Bonedancer in this book was the same Bonedancer in First Test!

Title: The Realms of the Gods
Author:  Tamora Pierce
Genre:  fantasy, YA
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  The evil Stormwing, formerly Emperor Ozorne of Carthak, and Uusoae, the Queen of Chaos, are in cahoots--the Stormwing wreaking havoc on mortal lands and Uusoae on the realms of the gods. Although gods pull Daine and the mage Numair into the realms to save their lives, the two feel they must return to earth, where they are needed in the desperate battle raging there. After a danger-filled trek to the land of the dragons, they enlist the aid of the dragons, who not only return them to earth but also join the fray, along with other immortals and, in the end, the gods themselves.
My thoughts: Reread. I love this book but it has some sad parts and some parts I just don't like. I love seeing the realms of the gods, but frankly, I don't much like Daine's parents XD The Dragonlands are awesome too. And more Rikash! I was so sad when he died though, I thought he deserved a happy ending for everything he'd done. But Daine and Numair finally got together, so a satisfactory ending :D

Title: Black Butler Volume 2
Author:  Yana Toboso
Genre:  manga, fantasy, mystery, drama
Rating: 4/5
Summary:  As high society's social calendar opens up and the Season draws to a close, London is gripped by fear. Someone has taken to stalking women of the night and painting the town red...in their blood. The name on everyone's lips seems to be "Jack the Ripper" - and as a result, the name on Queen Victoria's lips is Phantomhive. Summoned to London to clean up the mess created by this madman, Ciel Phantomhive arrives with Sebastian, his extraordinary butler, at his side to pour him tea, polish his silver, and...investigate a serial killer. And with the aid (and occasional interference) of a few of the Phantomhive house's numerous acquaintances, little stands in the way of the young earl getting to the bottom of this mystery. However, one question remains...can he handle the shattering truth behind it?
My thoughts: Again, beautiful artwork! And I think Sebastian is so much prettier than in the anime and I like him a lot more. And this volume had my two favorite characters, Undertaker and Madame Red!! Wonderful volume, I think I'm beginning to enjoy the manga more than the anime!
