Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Days 11 & 12

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Make a list of at least 3 things that you like about yourself.

  1. I'm creative. I do a lot of creative things like writing, icons and graphics, sewing, making jewelry, and more crafty things. And I'm pretty good at them I think, I even have a nerdy craft business I run in my spare time :)

  2. I'm super organized. Mostly bc mess and disorder makes me super anxious, but still. I love being in charge of things bc that means I can organize it to death and make sure things come out perfect (I'm also quite a perfectionist). That's probably why I love modding so much...

  3. I'm very curious. I like to know at least a little about everything and everyone. Whenever one of my friends or family members has a question about basically anything, they ask me first. Usually I have some idea of how to answer, but if I don't, I google and wiki until I do!

What makes you fannish? And by that we mean, what is it about a tv show/movie/book/band/podcast/etc that takes you from, "Yeah, I like that," to "I need MOAR!!!" Is it a character? A plotline? The pretty? Subtext that’s just screaming to be acknowledged?

This is something I've been musing for quite awhile actually bc while I am extremely multi-fandom, there are several fandoms where I absolutely adore the source material, but I've never felt the urge to get involved in the fandom through fic or meta or graphics or what have you. In general, I like things that are very character centric, so fandoms that really get me going usually have a character or ship that I get really invested in and/or that I identify with strongly. Emotionally constipated military guys who are secretly softies tend to do it for me most lol And worlds that are very complex but leave a lot to explore, like anything with magic (or similar) or aliens, where my imagination can run wild for fics and meta. I like the little hints of interesting things that maybe won't ever be explored much in canon, but which I can expand on or speculate about. In the past year or so aesthetics has become more important to me, too. I've been getting more into things that are just really pretty, where it's obvious they're taking a lot of effort to make things look good. Also, having friends who are already into the thing helps a lot bc I love being able to discuss and squee both online and irl.

On the flip side, there are some things that make me not want to get involved fannishly (and by that I mean more than just already having toxic or obnoxious fandoms or asshole creators). I don't like ensemble casts where there's not a character or two that really jump out at me bc I just have a hard time getting interested in those large group interactions. I don't like things that concentrate on the plot to the detriment of character development. I get so annoyed when characters stagnate while there are huge plot arcs bc I'd rather see more of the characters being themselves than whatever they're doing. I'll still read/watch things with ensembles and that are plot heavy, but I rarely if ever get into the fandom.

Still, there are some fandoms that seem to have all the good things going for them and I still don't really delve into the fandom so who even knows *shrugs*

Yes, character development/having characters I relate to make me want to get into fandom. It helps when there are already people on my flist involved!

Haha I can relate to this :D
I've honestly gotten into a lot fandoms I didn't originally have much interest in just bc I knew ppl who were into them haha
