Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 14

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

Share your love for something fannish: a trope, cliché, kink, motif, theme, format, or fandom.

The (many) tropes and kinks I mentioned last year still stand, so what to talk about this year?? I guess recently there have been a couple of... themes, I suppose, that I've been reading and thinking about. I honestly don't have a lot of recs for them, which is a shame, but hey, maybe someone else has recs for these themes that they could share? That would be swell :D

Magical towns. This is honestly inspired by just one fic I read in the past week, but man, I think I'm a little obsessed with the idea. Basically I love the idea of a town where magic is known but where they keep it hidden from outsiders, and someone moving to the town and figuring out about magic is a bonus. I know there has to be more canon and fic than just my one rec, but unfortunately I don't know of any...

  • What I Did On My Summer Vacation by grimm (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles). There's something weird about Beacon Hills that Stiles can't quite put his finger on. The way everyone in town knows his name the day he arrives. The way they insist the melancholic howling that echoes through the forest every night is just a dog. The way his dad denies getting a dog, even though Stiles comes home to find one sprawled across his bed, some big black thing whose eyes gleam red in the right light. The way that massive oak tree out in the woods vibrates under his touch, pulsing with sickly life. There's something weird going on in this town, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.

Trans characters. There are so few trans characters in canon media that it's really nice to be able to read some really well done fic about characters I love being trans. Not that there are very many of those fics, either, but I've come across some ones that just make me really happy :)

  • Black Jelly Beans, Actually by hoosierbitch (Spider-Man, Peter/Wade). Wade had scrawled ‘Parker’ on the front the envelope in pink gel pen. Inside was a Hallmark card which said, ‘Congratulations! It’s a GIRL!’

  • It Ain't Rocket Science by Ponderosa (Gotham, Harvey/Jim). Jim weighs his options, ‘cause a growing part of him wants Harvey to know. To have someone in this city other than Barbara know, someone who he cares about--even if he kind of hates to admit how much he cares about Harvey-fucking-Bullock--would make him feel a little less alone.

  • Good Kid, Gone Missing by Gemmi999 (Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney). She smoothes the skirt down over her body, trying to shake out the last of the wrinkles, trying to find a way to rearrange the ungraceful lump that she still can’t hide. Part of her thinks if she pulls her shirt down a little lower, shows off some of her cleavage, that it wouldn’t be that big a deal. People wouldn’t remember the bump, they’d remember the tits, the hooters, the jugs—all the disgusting names for her beautiful breasts (even if they only exist in her own imagination).

  • Forty Six and 2 by cacoethes79/FaeryQueen07 (Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles). Stiles has come to the realization that he’s going to need to tell the pack that he’s transgender before they find out on their own. He’s only ever told one person before, and he’s still thankful Scott was a true best friend. He only hopes the others take his news as well.
