Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Day 2

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

I've probably talked about it before, though maybe not here, but reading The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler probably literally saved my life. I read it when I was about the protagonist's age, and I was dealing with a lot of bad stuff just like she was. For me then, seeing someone who was fat like me, struggled with depression and self harm like, had difficult family relations like me, was really really important. It made me feel not so alone and it gave me courage to keep going. The first time, I checked it out from the library and read it about 10 times before returning it. I've read it several times since then, including most recently this past summer, and it's still so relevant to my struggles. I love this book so much and I'm forever grateful I read it when I did.

On a more recent note, Moana was everything I've ever wanted out of a movie and more. It was just so... inspiring and beautiful and I related hard to Moana and her struggle to find the balance between individuality and family. I left it feeling just really happy to have seen this girl be so brave and so independant and so loyal to her people all at once. For me, I don't really have that same cultural or family connection that she has, but I felt like I understood on an emotional level. It made me want to do more and be better, and just be more me. That's a feeling I guess I don't get a lot from media, but one that's really important to me rn as I try to figure out what the hell I'm doing with my life.

Some books are great treasures at just the right time in life. It sounds like this book was that for you; keep it close to your heart because fiction or non-fiction, I think we need books like we need water to drink.

On a personal note, I've treasured the saola icons you and kalakirya made for me. Now I've just got to see Moana!
They really do. I now own a couple copies of it so I can read it any time I need a little pick me up or a reminder that shit works out in the end :)

I'm so so glad you liked the icons! I think I saw you around on another comm recently and I was really delighted you were still using one I'd made. Honestly, that's one of my favorite things about making icons!

And yes, I highly recommend Moana! I've been trying to get everyone I know to watch it to little success lol
I really think books can be life savers so to speak... and especially if you find one where you can really relate to the protagonist and everything...

I loved MOANA... watched it with my niece and my best friend and it was seriously one of the best movies of 2016 :)
They really can :) It's part of why I love books so much, that they can have such an important impact on our lives.

Yay, I'm so glad to see someone else who liked it! I've been trying to get everyone around me to love it as much as I did but I don't think it's working lol
So, watch Moana, is what I am hearing. Thanks for writing about both of those. I'm glad you found the right book at the right time and I hope you find the answers you're looking for now.

(Also: your icon on this post is great.)
Definitely! It's such a good movie, and really beautifully animated as well imo. And thank you :)

haha thanks! It is sadly far too accurate. My friend has on occasion made a game out of naming random characters (or... not characters in some cases) just to have me come up with a justification for shipping them lol
